Qualification Description
- The Cert PT is a new qualification that supports the professional development of English language teachers.
- It is registered as a Level 6 (first degree level) qualification by Ofqual, the UK government office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation. This is NZQA Level 7.
- It focuses on pedagogical skills rather than language ability.
- It enables practising teachers to access specialist training that can transform their teaching practice.
- It comprises 100 hours total qualification time.
- In order to qualify for the Certificate, candidates must successfully complete four assessment tasks in which they evaluate, adapt, create and reflect on the use of teaching resources, informed by knowledge and insight.
What does the Cert PT bring to the candidates?

Communicative General English Cert PT
Course description
The ‘Communicative English’ course is primarily designed as a refresher course in English language teaching with particular attention to the online teaching of high school and tertiary level students. It focuses on English in use as a global communication tool, and is suitable for those teaching in either monolingual or multilingual environments.
This 10 week course is in two parts.
Part 1: a minimum of 30 hours virtual face-to-face course delivered in blocks of 3 hours each week for 10 weeks. Part 1 comprises a refresher course in teaching communicative English, and an introduction to the four written Tasks necessary to gain the Certificate.
Part 2: a maximum of 70 notional hours over the total 10 weeks of the course in which candidates draft and complete the four Tasks and receive detailed online input and feedback from the tutors.
The course will be taught in English, and all Tasks will be submitted in English.
It should be noted that this course does not guarantee certification: the candidates must meet the required standard at assessment to obtain the certificate.
Course frequency in 2023
Applications are now being accepted for the next Communicative General English online Cert PT course from
Sunday 26th March 2023 – Sunday 28th May 2023.
- Earlybird cost: $1200 per candidate before December 31st 2022.
- From January 1st 2023 $1400 per candidate.

All courses will include a minimum of 30 face-to-face delivery hours within a total of 100 hours.
Prerequisites
This course is aimed at in-service English language teachers working with teenagers or adults and is suitable for those teaching in either monolingual or multilingual environments.
All candidates will have either:
- an initial teaching qualification (at degree level) and one year’s teaching experience; and/or
- a minimum of two years’ teaching experience.
- a minimum English level of B2 (IELTS 5.5).
Proof of qualification and English level will be required on application.

Business Cert PT
Course description
The ‘Business English’ course is primarily designed to fill in both theoretical and practical gaps in knowledge for in-service language teachers working with teenagers or (young) adults enrolled in a Business English course. It is suitable for those teaching in either monolingual or multilingual environments.
In addition to its focus on English for the business environment, integral to this course is the thread of multiculturalism in the international business world. Thus, global business English taught using the Communicative Approach is the central theme, and this course explores the different ways the CA can be implemented using an online delivery mode.
This 10 week course is in two parts.
Part 1: a minimum of 30 hours virtual face-to-face course delivered in blocks of 3 hours each week for 10 weeks. Part 1 comprises a refresher course in teaching communicative English, and an introduction to the four written Tasks necessary to gain the Certificate.

Institutions may negotiate the dates and intensity of the course within reasonable limits.

One-to-One Courses
Unique personalised ELTANZ ONE to ONE English language courses online, for business and academic professionals whose first language is not English.

Our one-to-one sessions are delivered in one-hour blocks, but how many sessions you require and how often you require them depends on you. The dates and intensity of the course will be agreed by negotiation. We understand you are very busy people with exacting schedules. We do advise that a more intensive delivery, for example between 3 and 5 hours a week, usually produces the best result.
Before you start your course, you will fill in a questionnaire designed to help us understand your needs, and to give us an idea of your English proficiency.
We will endeavour to adjust the timing according to the time zone in which you live.

General English for Skilled Migrants
The course will help participants to:
- become more familiar with New Zealand culture and more specifically, with living in Palmerston North (e.g. small talk and greetings, social distance, idioms, work culture, housing, news)
- understand and develop skills in social communication in New Zealand workplaces (e.g. body language )
- analyse and practise workplace interactions (e.g. interpreting subtleties of direct and indirect manners of expression; for instance, direct negatives are uncommon in English interactions)
- Communicative strategies in the workplace (e.g. making requests; making suggestions; making a complaint or criticism; refusing politely; disagreeing; giving and receiving compliments; and apologising)
- practise interview skills (e.g. talking about yourself and your skills, answering questions)
- write emails e.g. requesting information, acknowledging information or providing personal details
- develop reading and writing skills related to everyday life (e.g. timetables, phone bills, filling out forms)
- develop speaking and listening skills related to everyday life (e.g. medical centre, shopping, public transport, telephone skills)
- demonstrate basic digital literacy
